Project made by Dairah Castricum 3V
Preface:
Hi everybody and welcome to my first project in year 3 from my high school period.
In this project we are going talk about my chosen music genre, pop music from the 80s.
This is what you can expect from this project:
- How is the pop genre created?
- The history of pop music
- Songs with pop genre
- My opinion
And last but not least, I’m gonna give you some pop songs & artist form the 80s.
Let’s start!
How is the pop genre created?
Pop was before the 50s a collective name for popular music.
If you talk about the hits before de 50s then the people are talking about pop music.
Pop music changes the music world, because pop is a mix of genres and it can also combine pop with other genres. For example a mix with pop and R&B or pop with jazz.
So you can imagine that there are artists and those are very happy with pop as a music genre.
In the beginning pop was the same as the genre rock, but that changes in the years 60s these 2 genres is a very good combination but it’s not the same.
Pop can usually be recognized by the repeated choruses and hooks called.
Those are short pieces of music that get stuck in your head that they play in the intro.
The music has a good melody and in the intro there are two or tree chords. Pop songs have always a singer.
History of Pop music:
In the late 1940s and the early 1950s there was a singer named Hank Williams who popularised country music in America.
Artist like Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley transformed the blues into a faster version and that is how rock-n-roll was born. After that become rock-n-roll an official music genre.
Elvis Presley was the first artist that used pop music, this genre was very important for his music career and he was a great singer that inspired people with this genre.
Who first used the medium of television as an extension of the traditional stage. For him the fame was very nice but also for the genre he sang.
The concept of pop idol was born!
In the second half of the 1980s, the phenomenon of nostalgia emerged, as a reaction to house music and computer-generated music. This penchant for music from the sixties and seventies was expressed in the many sixties revivals, the ‘classic radio’ stations, the television programs about pop artists of the past and the enormous sales results of compilation CDs by these musicians.
And so began more people to like pop music and became increasingly popular allowing more and more artists started making songs that get sung genre.
10 songs with pop genre:
• Beat it – michael Jackson, link: https://youtu.be/oRdxUFDoQe0
This song is made in the year 1982 from his popular album named: thriller.
Michael is singing about two teams who wants to fight and when that happened comes Jackson In the middle of the 2 teams and sing this song.
• The winner takes it all – ABBA, link: https://youtu.be/92cwKCU8Z5c
The band ABBA was a very lovely band that makes a good career in the 80s. This song is produced in 1980 and is from the album named: Super Trouper.
The meaning of this song is that when someone win, there also someone lose.
They sing:
The winner takes it all. The loser’s standing small
Beside the victory. That’s her destiny
• Burning up – Madonna, link: https://youtu.be/pufec0Hps00
Queen of pop ( Madonna ) produced this song around 1983, this was also the name of her album.
Many authors noted that the “Burning Up” music video was a beginning of Madonna’s depiction of her taking control of a destabilized male sexuality.
It’s a little awkward topic for a song if you ask me, but that does describes what for a person she was.
• I wanna dance with somebody – Whitney Houston, link: https://youtu.be/eH3giaIzONA
An amazing song was produced in 1987, from Whitney her album also named: Whitney.
The genre of this song is pop but normally the singer uses the genres R&B and soul but in 1987 she probably wants to use an other genre.
This song doesn’t really have a special meaning but is made for dancing and swinging. Because Whitney Houston really was a fantastic singer if you ask me!
• There must be an angel – Eurythmics, link: https://youtu.be/RCdneDxFRYQ
The last song is from a less popular singer to me. It was produced in the middle of the 80s by the album named: be yourself tonight.
I can’t find what de song means but the song was very popular in America!
Further you see below some songs that were also known in the 80s:
• All night long – Lionel Richie, link: https://youtu.be/nqAvFx3NxUM the song is is from the album named Can’t slow down. From the year 1983.
• Wake me up before you go go – Wham!, link: https://youtu.be/pIgZ7gMze7A it’s from the album Make it big and produced in 1984. Absolutely one of my favourite songs.
• Walk like an Egyptian – the Bangles, link: https://youtu.be/Cv6tuzHUuuk the song is part of their album named: Different Lights. From the year 1986.
• What’s love got so with it – Tina Turner, link: https://youtu.be/oGpFcHTxjZs. The song was made in 1984 and is from her album Private Dancer.
• When doves cry – Prince, link: https://youtu.be/UG3VcCAlUgE and this song is special because is part of a very popular movie produced in 1984 named: Purple rain.
My opinion:
So this was my first project of my 3rd year of school.
I learned a lot of new things about music in the 80s and I must say that I don’t like every song I heard in this time.
And I think people were in the 80s more comfortable to each other’s lives and that makes me think about how we live our lives now.
I’m very happy that I have made this project and I hope you like to read this project and that you also learned something about pop music in the 80s.
I really want to thank you for reading this project and I hope I gave you enough information about this topic. Thanks for reading!
