Book title: Percy Jackson and the lightning thief
Explanation of title:
The book is about Percy Jackson that who is suspicious of stealing the lightning from the God Zeus but he found the real thief and brings the lightning back
Author, name and background:
Rick Riordan is a author who loves to write literary collections.
He comes from America and he is famous with his collection Percy Jackson and the Olympics.
Genre(s):
This book is a fantasy novel in combination with the Greek mythology. This book also contains a lot of adventures when they are about to go to the Olympic. So they fight with a lot of enemies.
Main character:
- Percy is at the age of seventeen when he discovered he is a half blood. Because he is being charged by stealing Zeus (supreme deity) his lightning. If he wants to prove that he is innocent he must go to the Olympic. If he doesn’t do anything then it would be a war between the gods in the Olympic. Because it is against the rules that a god makes a child with a normal human. So Zeus is mad at his brother Poseidon. And he says it’s Poseidon’s fault that the lightning was stolen.
- Annabeth Chase, who is also a half blood (daughter of Athena). Annabeth is a friend who Percy met at a camp for half blood children. She travel together with Percy and Grover to get the lightning back. Annabeth is also very skilled in a battle so that can be very important during the trip.
- Grover Underwood is Percy his best friend. He has the legs of a goat but he really cares about Percy so that’s why he is gonna join the trip to the Olympic.
Main Themes: Below are the main themes
• Isolation. Because he lived in a half blood camp far away from his mom.
• Love. The relations with his friends
• Family. His parents
Symbolism:
Lightning – The Master Bolt is the symbol of Zeus’ power, which all other lightning bolts are patterned after. It is the first and most powerful weapon that the Elder Cyclopes made for the Olympian gods.
Water – In this case, water symbolizes how powerful the connection between a parent and a child can be, and what effects it can have. This is because Percy’s father is the god of the sea. Another symbol in this book is, the master bolt. Although the most common thing readers will think of when they hear “master bolt” is power, it can also symbolize peace.
Percy’s dream – Percy’s dreams are not visions of the future—rather, they are visions of the present, clues into the scheming and plotting that is occurring beyond their line of sight. Dreams in literature are often symbols, and in this case, they are messages from the gods that clue Percy in to what he needs to know in order to succeed at his quest.
Style and tone:
It’s about 17-year-old demigod Percy Jackson and his quests to defeat the evil powers that oppose him. The overriding tone is cynical, yet the high-energy scenes, endearing characters and direct ties to Greek mythology also support its upbeat and suspenseful tone.
Story in short:
The Lightning Thief follows the story of young Percy Jackson, a troubled 12-year-old boy with a secret unknown even to himself. Diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD, while being raised primarily by his mother, his life so far has not always been easy. Percy is repeatedly kicked out of school due to unexplainable events that aren’t really his fault. While on a sixth-grade field trip to a museum, Percy faces his strangest event yet. After an argument with a school bully, his math teacher, Mrs. Dodds, draws Percy aside to punish him. Mrs. Dodds suddenly transforms into a monster and attacks him. His favorite teacher, Mr. Brunner, rescues Percy by throwing him a ballpoint pen that changes into a sword.
At a school trip becomes clear that Percy is in danger because he was attacked by a teacher that changed into a monster. To complete his mission he must beat a few creeps like Medusa. With his helping friends they came in the most dangerous adventures.
Opinion and recommendation (plus why):
I find that Percy Jackson and the lightning thief is a very nice book because you really join the story and that makes that you read the whole book very easily.
But if you want to follow the book it’s practical to know something of the Greek mythology. Because if you don’t know who the Gods are and don’t know who for example Medusa is then is the book difficult to understand.
So yes I recommend this book very well but make sure you know something about the Greek mythology.
