Black history:
Made by Maaike Buis and Dairah Castricum from 3Va.
Preface:
Hello everybody, in this project we are gonna talk about black history around the 60s.
At first we are going to do some research and, we made a questionnaire with questions about the video’s we watched. The links to those video’s are below the questionnaire.
We are gonna do research about:
• How was the situation of coloured people around 1960?
• What did the government do about the discrimination?
• How was life as a coloured person?
• The current situation in America.
Have fun reading!
Research:
Unfortunately there is a lot of discrimination in the world.
Formerly black people were treated very different than white people. For example: white people live in very big houses and are very rich when coloured people have to work really really hard for there food and their clothes or something.
Black people must go to other hospitals, shopping centre and other bathrooms etcetera.
In 1954 the lives of coloured Americans became better in the big cities. In the south side of America there was still big differences between white and coloured Americans.
During the 60s there were a lot of protests because Afro-Americans were completely done with all the discrimination. The Montgomery Bus Boycott has shown that a lot can be achieved by organizing nonviolent protests. Therefore, on August 28, 1963, countless people gather in Washington to peacefully protest against the unequal rights of the African American people. During this “March to Washington,” Martin Luther King delivers one of his most memorable speeches of all time to more than two hundred thousand people of all races and ages. A lot of violence was used to stop it.
The government promised that the situation was getting better but, that never happened. Around the 60s you had the Jim Crows Laws. That law confirmed the difference between black and white.
The government promised that there came new rules. But, nothing.
Until 1964, The Civil Rights Act of 1964 replaced all state and local laws requiring segregation. These rules are telling us that coloured and white people can go to the same rooms and shops. Partly because more and more black parties came into the government. The discrimination was still there but the new rules gave coloured people more freedom.
Discrimination can also be religion based. Most of the people in the USA are Cristian.
In the south of America live ethnic groups. This means that people live together with all other religion but, this groups are not very big. These mixed relationships are condemned and are virtually non-existent even in American television series and movies.
Right now people get still discriminated by other people. Since 2013 came Black Lives Matter accomplished. Coloured people are most of the time not very rich and if you were born in a coloured district you get in a circle. In America there is a rule that makes that poor people only get in poor schools and then you can’t get a very good job so, you don’t really get a fair chance to build a good life. Also sexually and religion is still an important topic that we need to respect.
Happily the discrimination is about to get very important and, we all hope that we can accept everyone who he/she is.
Questionnaire:
We made a questionnaire about discrimination and we asked people the questions below:
• What is you gender?
• Do you think there is a lot of discrimination?
• What do you think of your home situation?
• Have you ever been discriminated against?
• How did you react to that?
• Have you ever discriminated someone else?
• What was you reason for that?
• Do you think racism and discrimination are the same?
• And what is discrimination to you?

Results questionnaire:
• The gender is very different and that’s just how you are.
• A lot of people think there is a lot of discrimination in the world and unfortunately they are right.
• The most people who fill in our questionnaire have a good home situation. For us it’s very normal but we have to realise that not everyone has a safe place at home.
• Not a lot of people who fill in the questionnaire are discriminated but some of them had the feeling they were different or not accepted. If you toke a look in the research you see that for people in America get more discriminated.
• Most people don’t say something when people stare at them but in the last years came out that you only can reach something if you stand up for yourself.
• Because the history behind us we know that we have respect each other so nobody filled in they discriminated somebody.
• Remarkably most people think that racism and discrimination are the same but, they’re wrong. Discrimination is judging someone on how he/she looks and with racism you treat one person differently than the other. So there is really a difference.
• But we are glad to see that most people know what discrimination is and that they know it consist.
This was the fourth project of year tree and I must say this one was not very nice to make because discrimination is a very heavy topic. Fortunately, we have now become a bit wiser and so we can reflect on this more in our daily lives.
I hope you are also wiser. Thanks for reading!
