Story in short: “The Rest of Us Just Live Here” by Patrick Ness is a captivating young adult novel that offers a fresh twist on the usual hero stories. In this book, the author introduces us to a world where extraordinary things happen, like battles with supernatural creatures and the looming threat of the world ending. However, instead of focusing on the chosen heroes who save the day, the story follows a group of regular high school students who are just trying to live their lives. These students are not the ones with special powers or destined to save the world. They are the ones on the sidelines, facing the everyday struggles of adolescence. They worry about their grades, navigating friendships, dealing with family issues, and figuring out their own identities. While the “indie kids” are caught up in epic quests, our main characters are more concerned with the ups and downs of teenage life.
Patrick Ness skillfully weaves together the lives of these ordinary teenagers, creating a relatable and engaging narrative. He explores themes of identity, mental health, and the power of embracing our own uniqueness. Through his heartfelt storytelling, he reminds us that it’s not necessary to have superpowers or grand destinies to be heroes. Sometimes, simply facing our personal challenges with resilience and authenticity is enough. The novel also delves into the importance of friendship and support. The characters lean on each other during difficult times, demonstrating the strength found in genuine connections. It highlights the significance of being there for one another, offering a comforting message to readers about the power of solidarity and empathy. “The Rest of Us Just Live Here” is a thought-provoking and inspiring read that resonates with readers of all ages. It encourages us to embrace our own unique journeys, appreciate the beauty of ordinary life, and find strength in the face of adversity.

Opinion and recommendation (plus why): Honestly I think that this is not my type of books. I found it very interesting to read and to learn more about the main character but it was very hard for me to get through the book. It is a good book to read if you like fantasy fiction but this book was definitely not made for me.
