Author, name and background:
Angie Thomas is writer of The hate u give. She was born 20 September 1988 and she is 34 years old. Angie Thomas was born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi and that is the place where she still lives. She has written the book because she was inspired by the shooting death of Oscar Grant in 2009.

This book is a roman and it has urban fiction in it.

Main character: Starr Carter
Relation to and interaction with other main characters:
She is a very very good friend of Khalil and she tries to be the best version of herself for others. She is the daughter of Lisa and Maverick Carter and she has a younger brother: Sekani Carter. Her half-brother is Seven Carter, they have a caring relationship.

Main character: Khalil Harris
Relation to and interaction with other main characters: Khalil and Starr were very good friends. His grandmother has cancer and his mother has a drug addiction. He had to sell drugs for a gang to get money. He was killed by a cop: one-fifteen.

Main character: Maverick Carter
Relation to and interaction with other main characters: He is the father of Starr, Seven and Sekani Carter. He is Lisa Carter her husband and he wants to keep his family safe.
He was in prison because he dealer drugs for a gang, but when he got out he has started a grocery store. Uncle Carlos helped Lisa during while Maverick was in prison.

Main character: Uncle Carlos
Relation to and interaction with other main characters: He is Lisa Carter her brother and Uncle of Starr. His relationship with Starr is very good because he had a father role in Starr her childhood. He is a cop and helped the Carter’s through the process when Khalil died.

Main Themes:

  • Racism ( black lives matter) – there is a lot of racism in the book.
  • Identity and blackness – Starr struggles with her identity and blackness.
  • Police brutality – there is a lot of violence by cops in this book.
  • Family and community – the Carter’s were very important for each other.
    Symbolism:
    One-fifteen – that symbolize the cop who killed Khalil.
    Garden Heights – that symbolize the contrast between the pastoral name and the harshness and violence in the neighborhood.
    Hiphop music.

Story in short:
Starr is a girl living in Garden Heights. She is black but goes to a school with white people called Williamson prep. She is friends with Khalil but after a party he died. This was because the cops handled unjustified. Starr lost a very very good friend of her and she is the only one who saw it happen. Her friends at school don’t understand how Starr is feeling and that makes her very sad. Starr talked a lot with her uncle Carlos, he is also a police officer and she realised that there won’t be justice for Khalil. There are a lot of protest for justice but unfortunately there never came justice for Khalil. Despite all the help she got from the government party that is the voice of black people in politics. Her family situation is suffering under all those trials. Khalil his death has opened a lot of eyes but justice never came. Starr her family rebuild and they live happy with each other.
